Growing up in Southern California, avocados have always been a staple in my household. Any party that you might attend around here, you will always find an avocado dish of some sort, usually guacamole. My kids have also grown up eating avocados and, much to my delight, they love them as much as I do! Not only are avocados delicious and versatile, but they’re also very good for you, it’s a win-win!
Avocados contribute nearly 20 nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and phytonutrients, that are important to infant/toddler nutrition. Also, the avocado’s smooth, creamy consistency and mild taste makes it one of the first fresh fruits a child can enjoy. If you introduce avocados to your children when they’re young, they’ll most likely love them as they grow older! In our household, we use avocados in many different ways, but my favorite is just serving a few slices with roasted chicken, so simple!
Recently, I had the opportunity to host a pool party celebrating all things avocado, complete with taste-testing. We wanted a mix of familiar and new avocado dishes, so my husband made his famous bacon-tomatillo guacamole (yes it’s as awesome as it sounds!) Meanwhile, I tried a fun new avocado-watermelon salad with radishes and feta, what an amazing combination. We grilled up some chicken breasts later in the day and served the leftover avocado on the side. Everything was a hit!
Wholesome, fresh foods are less likely to contain added sugars, salt and other processed ingredients. This is one of the many reasons I love serving avocado dishes to my family, especially my kids. We all noticed how great we felt after the avocado party, even though we were stuffing our faces all day! Do you have a favorite way to use avocados in your own household? If so I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
