From the time we are born, nurturing our mind, body and soul is essential to good health. For children especially, staying active, getting a balanced diet and socializing through organized activities is of the utmost importance. The healthy habits formed in childhood can form a foundation for a healthy life at all ages. Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Triple Play program encourages us to contribute to shaping our children’s future and get active with our family.
The Triple Play program is the signature healthy lifestyle program from Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). Nearly 3 out of 10 kids in the United States is either overweight or obese, so naturally it is crucial to encourage kids of all ages to live a healthy and active life now and forever. BGCA has partnered with Coca-Cola and the Anthem BlueCross Foundation for the Triple Play program, the details and a Game Plan can be found online here. You can find fun activities to do with your children to teach them the basics of a healthy mind, body and soul. We took several of these activities for a test drive in our own family, and had so much fun doing them!
One of our family favorites in the Triple Play Game Plan was Get Fit: Circuit Stations (pages 20-23). My son has a funny obsession with traffic cones and is always setting up obstacle courses around our house anyway, so it was fun to put these cones to use for Station 3, the Agility station. As you can see in the screenshot below from the Triple Play Game Plan, these activities are simple and easy to set up, but can really get kids moving! Kids should be getting at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day, yet only roughly 25% of 12-15 year-olds in the US are meeting that recommendation. Through the Triple Play program and support from BGCA partners, we can build the next generation of leaders, providing resources to get and stay healthy through nutrition and health education, better access to healthy foods, avoidance of risky behaviors and a lifelong commitment to fitness. Download the Triple Play Game Plan and get the fun started with your children!
